The question that I had about the media topics was that did the article have to be published in the week that the assignment was due? Or can it be from some time before?

RT, any published article can be used for a media topic. I suggest that you look in the local media, so that the article might refer to the marine environment of the Hawaiian Islands or the Pacific. However, any media article about any topic published at anytime is OK.
